I know book posts aren't my most popular, but I can't help writing them. As a nerdy school librarian, books are my thing. My nerdy, bloggy thing!
When Bee was born, I thought: "No problem. I GOT this, ya'll. This boy will READ."
Guess again.
Homeskillet wouldn't sit still for any books, not even ones with just a word on each page.
Reading with him was torture. He hated it. Time and time again, we'd sit down and he'd wriggle right off my lap.
Which kinda made
me hate it.
I tried reading as he played. Nope, he'd crawl in the opposite direction.
Reading while he was in the bath. No dice, he also hated baths. Lose-lose.
Finally, I brought home
That's Not My Plane.
First night we sat to read it at bedtime, he sat through the whole thing. I'm not sure he enjoyed it, but he sat there. Night #2, he touched the texture on each page as I read. Progress. By night #3 be was pointing at it and saying "plane, plane!"
SUCCESS! Needless to say, the
rest of the books in the series are slowing making their way into our home whenever I come across them. And they are all tried and true favorites.
I know not all boys are reluctant readers, and
certainly there are many girls who enjoy the following books too. But here's four additional Bee-approved books, the ones that keep him in my lap, engaged, and snuggled in for some special mama-son time. Finally!
Hands-down, one of my favorites. Bee loves talking about the animals, and hearing the "goodnights" is various voices. Plus, we snore and shhhh and gasp as appropriate... we really do "read" this one together!
LOVE. The simple illustrations and text on Bee's favorite subject matter are a must-read every night. I'll often find him flipping through these on his own, staring at the pictures and pointing out the moon, banana, and cars. {note: I couldn't find new copies of Trains on Amazon, but keep your eyes open at used book or consignment sales-- I see them there often!}
Cute babies and patterned text make this a favorite series with both
kids. Plus, each page has large flap with something hiding behind it.
What's not to love?
You have no idea the Thomas obsession going on right now in my house.
Both Noodle and Bee fight over the books that came in this little box
set. Noodle carries the box like a briefcase, tells me she's going to
"work", and sneaks into Bee's room and reads them. The text isn't super,
but I'll admit A Crack in the Track is growing on me and the kids certainly love it.
I confess. I snuck in a bonus title for me. Bee enjoys it, don't get me wrong, but there's something about a Sandra Boynton book that I adore. They make me giggle. My other favorite is But Not the Hippopotamus. Hilarity at it's finest, I tell you!
What are your favorite books for toddler boys?
Or girls, for that matter?
Which titles should I check out next time I'm at the library, should I decide in a moment of madness to go again?
{just kidding, we still go, but wait 'til you hear what the kids did to my husband last time they were there. Those stinkers.}

Until recently I was nannying a little boy whose parents had never once read to him.. which completely baffled me! I faced the same struggles you did, he'd do anything to get away from the book and then, I pulled out the character books.. much like your Thomas set the only way to get him interested was with characters he already knew.. even if I thought the stories were a bit average, I figured anything was better than nothing. Then, quite by accident, I rediscovered something wonderful.. Green Eggs and Ham by Dr.Seuss... the rhyming words and silly pictures, plus the repetitive nature of the story really appealed to him as he really thought HE was reading along with me.. and then it opened the door to all the other Seuss books as well! Gold!
ReplyDeleteMy 2 year old loves to read and Blue Hat, Green Hat is his most favorite. Probably because its so easy to read from memory!
ReplyDelete1. We have the Thomas boxed set and my kids squabble over it! We have the extended version of Stop, Train! Stop! and it is a bit better than the board book.
ReplyDelete2. When we read Blue Hat, Green Hat we say, "OOPS! Silly Turkey!" at the end of every page. One of our favorite librarians in Chicago taught us to do that. :) (Yeah, we have our favorites!)
3. N is in love with books that rhyme right now. Jamberry, Move Over Rover, and anything by Richard Scary are big favorites!
Our little guy loves most of those books, but we don't have Thomas set. He loves his Thomas book with flaps that have buttons to press when you uncover something under the flap. It's called "A Surprise for Thomas," but I couldn't find it online to link it.
ReplyDeleteWe have the Byron Barton "Trains" book -- we got it at Barnes and Noble and it looks like it's still available new.
Our little guy also loves Dr. Seuss and other rhyming books. It helps him remember the last word in the sentence, so he can chime in and "read" with us. He loved "Hop on Pop," but his new favorite is "The Cat in the Hat" and "The Cat in the Hat Comes Back."
His other current favorites are Clifford books.
I LOVE your book posts! Also, Blue Hat/Green Hat was the first book that Olive "read" to herself from memory--such a great pattern to follow and so stinkin' CUTE. OMG, have you seen the Pete the Cat series? I feel like maybe you have...anyway, was just thinking that would be another good one for toddler boys!
ReplyDeleteOh my gosh! 'A crack in the track' is it just me who finds this stupidly funny?! Anyhoo, my twins are little pickles when it comes to reading.
ReplyDeleteI know it will come in time, but still trying to find the right books, will have a look at some of these, thanks for sharing.
Thanks for these tips! I LOVE the sandra boynton books - ALL of them - and I often force my son to listen to them because they entertain me. I hate when he asks for his clifford books. :-/
ReplyDeleteHave you shared any of Kate McMullan's I Stink books? I love them.

As a nerdy literacy professor, I enjoy your book posts! Scholastic has a Thomas box set of 12 books that are very appropriate in terms of content (we have the board book set you have, too, but the Scholastic ones are read more often because of their simplicity!) I agree with the above post regarding I Stink - the Scholastic Story time movie version is also a big hit in this house!
ReplyDeleteLove it! But not the hippopotamus is one of my favorites, too. At one point, I had that sucker memorized which I'm sure you do, too. So many of the others you mentioned are favorites here, too.
ReplyDeleteI'll take a nerdy book post any day. Keep writing them!
Well Thomas is a given, right? Landon is all about his trains too. We haven't read very many Thomas books though. I will have to look into that. Thanks for sharing at the party!!

Not your most popular posts? These are awesome!! We're huge fans of The Gruffalo here. And Hands, Hands, Fingers, Thumb is another favorite.
ReplyDeleteThese are great! The Goodnight series is one of our favorites. It's funny now that my boys are 4 and 6 we have dug some of those toddler books back out and they are reading them.
ReplyDeleteI'm shamelessly combing through old posts to find giveaways I missed and I just noticed you referred to Bee as Homeskillet. Dying. Also, now I just need to type this word before I sign off: Home-Skilly-Biscuit.
